A student has been on the trip of a lifetime after a cheque presentation at the Ellesmere Port campus of West Cheshire College.

Seventeen-year-old Joe Vickers, who is studying a BTEC diploma in sports and leisure, jetted off on a 10-day trip to South Africa.

He was presented with the cheque from the college’s Overseas Volunteering Fund by vice principal Caroline Fidmont.

Joe was based in Cape Town, where he coached football to children from a variety of schools.

The college’s overseas volunteering fund helps provide financial support to students who want to go abroad and take part in significant and exceptional global volunteering experiences.

Joe said: “I was really surprised when I found out I was receiving the funding and I am very grateful.

“I will be able to use the skills that I have learnt at college to teach the kids whilst I’m out there.

“I really want to be a PE teacher and I think the trip will give me lots of experience as well as the chance to see a totally different culture.”

Joe has also been awarded a Vinspired V100 Award for contribution to volunteering in the local community.

The vice principal said:“I was very impressed with Joe’s application and was delighted to present him with his cheque.

“We are always keen to support students who wish to participate in volunteering trips and we hope he has a fantastic experience.”
