College students trained in Ellesmere Port are helping a Chester community get fit.

Two foundation degree health and fitness students from West Cheshire College are volunteering at Lache Community Centre gym to help promote the benefits of keeping fit and staying active among the local community.

Geoff Hilton, programme leader for sport at the college, explained: “This is a fantastic example of how the college and our students can work with the local community for the benefit of local residents.

“Both students are in their second year of their foundation degree and have already completed their personal trainer and exercise referral qualifications giving them the skills and knowledge to support individuals within the community.”

Andy Wood, 19, from Ellesmere Port , is one of those involved helping to manage the gym which is open to the public every week day from 9am to noon.

Dennis Smale, community centre manager at the council, added: “It’s great to see the gym open for local residents to use. It is a great opportunity to socialise whilst improving health and wellbeing.”
