MIKE HALL MP is to stand down at the next election.
The MP for Weaver Vale - which includes the Frodsham area - said ill health due to an abnormal heart rhythm led to his decision.
He said the condition, which he has had for 18 years, has stopped responding to medication and that despite radio therapy two weeks ago he continues to feel uncomfortable, breathless and unable to drive or work.
He said standing down will give the best chance of full recovery.
The announcement means the end of an 18 year career as a Labour MP, having first won the Warrington South seat in 1992, and then served Weaver Vale - comprising much of Runcorn’s new town and Northwich - since 1997.
A spokeswoman dismissed the time spent as an MP and the time he has had a heart condition as coincidence.
The Weaver Vale constituency party will meet on Thursday to begin the search for a successor.
Mr Hall said it was an “enormous honour and a privilege” to serve as MP.
He added that he and constituents achieved much including restoring a £355m National Pension Bus Fund, stopping the ‘rain tax’ on community groups, and opening a new health centre in Windmill Hill.
He said: “My wife Lesley and I want to thank the people of Weaver Vale for their wonderful support.
“I had hoped to once again carry the flag for Labour and win Weaver Vale at the General Election leading with vigour and total commitment.
“However, I face the prospect of more surgery in three months time, and not knowing if I can play an effective role until polling day.”
