Firecrackers welcomed in the Chinese New Year in Chester on Saturday as crowds turned out to watch the annual performance by the Wah Lei Chinese Association.

The Lord Mayor of Chester joined Mia Tan of the association to witness the God of Prosperity, the Emperor of Heaven and The Happy Buddha take to the city streets to entertain shoppers in Eastgate street and Bridge Street.

The audience enjoyed lion and dragon dances and tai chi demonstrations before the Lord Mayor, Cllr Bob Rudd helped children ‘feed’ the lions with lettuce that was ‘spat’ out - the leaves being symbols of good luck.

This year is the Chinese Year of the Sheep or Goat and people born in that year are often said to be hard-working, pure-hearted, and loyal.
