A new football club has been set up to help visually impaired people get involved in the sport and has high hopes of going all the way to the top.

Winsford Wolves Visually Impaired Football Club (VIFC) was founded by manager Craig Acton, chairman Joshua Downing, sighted coach Claire Acton and club secretary Natasha Jenkins in April.

Its 10 players – some from as far afield as Leicester and the Peak District – will play in the National Visually Impaired Football League, which sees teams meet monthly between September and April.

The mixed-gender team has already struck up a partnership with Winsford United FC.

“Winsford United have been a great help to us offering us their facilities free of charge for committee meetings and fundraising events, and we are in the process of enhancing both clubs on a community and footballing level setting up friendly matches between both clubs and organising fundraisers benefiting both clubs,” Natasha explained.

Now they are on a mission to raise money for equipment, travel to and from games, insurance and league registration.

Upcoming fundraisers include collections at Matalan in Northwich on July 24 and 25, and a tombola and cake sale at Boots Opticians in Northwich on August 22.

Of his aspirations for Winsford Wolves VIFC, player Nick Bramley said: “There is only one way to go that I can see and that’s to the top.”

Claire added: “I hope all players enjoy the experience of playing as a team for Winsford Wolves and are successful in their future endeavours as part of the club.”
