A lawyer from Queen’s Park in Chester chose to spend his 50th birthday cycling from London to Paris to raise money for a charity that provides water and sanitation projects for people in Africa.

Dave Wearden joined seven other volunteers including his sister Clare on a gruelling 234 mile cycle ride from Tower Bridge in London to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, to raise the cash for the charity Village Water.

The charity has just launched its Well Good Appeal to support people in rural Zambia and Mozambique with safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Until October 29 every £1 donated will be doubled by the UK government, meaning the charity will be able to reach twice as many people.

Dave said: “My sister asked me to cycle with a very willing and able group of volunteers and trustees from the charity and a couple of friends she’d already managed to rope in!

“I’m so grateful to all the people who sponsored me – I have raised about £400 already.

“It was a hugely rewarding and memorable experience for a hugely worthwhile - and underfunded - charity. Thousands die every day globally from poor water hygiene and sanitation.

“Just £25 changes someone’s life and because the UK government is matching every £ you give, all donations will go twice as far.”
