HALTON MP Derek Twigg this week spoke of his concern over the plight of Run-corn FC Halton.

Mr Twigg has revealed he is 'very concerned' over the future of the Linnets and has vowed to do all he can within his power to help the club.

The MP, who was recently promoted to Schools Minister by Tony Blair, said: 'I am very concerned over the current situation involving Runcorn.

'I do hope something can be sorted so that the club remains in the borough, but I am limited in what I can do to help the club as I believe the problem stems around finance.'

Last week, Halton Borough Council said it had no alternative but to seek a new tenant for 2005-06 as the club had not settled its stadium debts despite 'frequent requests'.

A council spokesperson added: 'The club was invited by the council to propose a solution to meet its outstanding debt to the council. To date, the club has presented no sensible proposals.

'Consequently, the council has terminated the club's long-term agreement to use Halton Stadium.

'The council is prepared to make Halton Stadium available until the end of the season on a pay-as-you-play basis.'

Martin Fallon, of the Linnets Independent Supporters' Trust (LIST), claimed Witton Albion may be able to accommodate the borough's long-standing football club in the short term and Pavilions could be upgraded for a return at a future date.

Mr Twigg has met with LIST officials in the past, but said: 'I do not know enough about the way things have gone with the club as nobody from Runcorn has been in touch with me for a long while.

'It is obviously a shame if the club cannot stay in the borough but as I have said, it is all about finance.

'I am willing to help in any way I can and if somebody wants to speak to me about it then I am more than happy to discuss things.'
