By-elections are taking place for two wards on Cheshire West and Chester Council this Thursday (July 10).

In Chester’s Boughton ward, electors will go to the polls as a result of the recent death of long-serving Labour Cllr David Robinson who enjoyed a majority of  just 216 votes over the Tory candidate in second place.

A former city, county and CWaC councillor, Cllr Robinson contested two parliamentary elections and was his party’s spokesman for the environment.

Candidates in Boughton are: Martyn Delaney (Labour), Charles Dodman (UKIP), Mark Gant (Lib Dem), John McNamara (Green Party) and Kate Vaughan (Conservative).

A by-election will also take place on the same day in Northwich in the town centre ward of Winnington and Castle.

Also a Labour seat, the vacancy has arisen due to the resignation of Cllr Amy Mercer-Bailey because her new job is politically restricted and prevents her from holding political office.

When elected in May 2011, she became the authority’s youngest councillor at the age of 19. Cllr Mercer-Bailey also had to step down from her role as a town councillor for Bridge Ward for the same reason.

Candidates in Winnington and Castle are: Alice Chapman (Lib Dem), Sam Naylor (Labour), Jim Sinar (Conservative) and Daniel Wright (UKIP).

The counts take place on the night. The current political composition of Cheshire West and Chester Council is Con 42, Lab 30, LibDem 1 – not including the two vacant seats previously held by Labour.
