A TUSHINGHAM man is looking forward to seeing his children todaywhen he takes a well-earned break from a gruelling bike ride across the UK.

Stephen Davies will be greeted by Tara, six, and four-year old Marcus, when he and 600 other cyclists stop at Bickerton Village Hall, an official feeding station on the 1,000 mile Deloitte Ride Across Britain 2010.

Children from Bickerton Primary School will line the streets to welcome the riders, including Olympic rower James Cracknell, to the village.

Stephen, director of the Cheshire solar PV company, The Green Electrician, started the challenge on Saturday, June 12 in John O’Groats and hopes to reach Land’s End on Sunday. He is racing with drinking buddies Stephen Bennett, Louis Hill, Richard Chesworth, Julian Rathbone and Mark Holt and his two brothers-in-law to raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“A group of us meet for a drink in the Cholmondeley Arms and we cycle a lot around the Cheshire Plains and the Welsh mountains so we thought we’d give it a go,” he said. “We’ve had a few phone conversations in the last couple of weeks wondering what we’ve got ourselves into!”

No stranger to challenge Stephen sailed to the Arctic in 2002 and last year competed in the gruelling French cyclo-sportif, the Ardechoise. The cyclists are camping throughout the nine-day challenge but Stephen was hoping to sneak home for a bath last night (Wednesday) if he could convince wife Claire to pick him up from Knutsford.
