Rush hour passengers were subjected to severe disruption this evening (Wednesday, April 1) after a train broke down just outside Chester station.

Merseyrail services between Chester and Liverpool had to be cancelled after the breakdown which took place between Chester and Bache stations around 5pm.

Passenger Barry Ellams, who works in Chester, was trying to get home to Liverpool when the breakdown happened and ended up waiting more than two hours for services to resume.

Speaking from the platform at Chester Station, he said: "The train to Chester from Liverpool had broken down only 300 yards from Chester station and passengers had been stranded on it since 5pm.

"Another Merseyrail train shunted the broken down train into Chester about 6.40pm. There were a lot of angry passengers disembarking with a couple requiring assistance from police and medical staff.

"There are now 150 people waiting on platform 7b for the next train to Liverpool."

A statement from Merseyrail said: "Train services running through this station are returning to normal but some services may still be cancelled or delayed.

"Disruption is expected until 19:45. Merseyrail are very sorry for the delay to your journey this evening."
