A FOUR-CAR pile-up caused huge peak hour tailbacks on the M56 on Tuesday.

The occupants of the cars involved escaped with minor injuries but all three lanes of the motorway’s eastbound carriageway between junction 15 with the M53 and 14 (Hapsford) were blocked from 5.22pm until the road was cleared at 6.07pm.

Traffic, which had backed up to the M53, was allowed to slowly pass the vehicles on the hard shoulder but many drivers on their way home from work were caught up in the jam.

An Audi A3, a Ford Fiesta, a Ford Kuga and a Mercedes were involved.

It is the third major incident to affect the stretch of road in two weeks.

Sixty-five-year-old grandmother Jennifer Jones of Powys, Welshpool, died after her car was involved in a collision near the Hapsford junction on May 23.

Less than 24 hours later, two vehicles were involved in a collision on the opposite side of the M56. Lane three of J12-14 was blocked and closed for 25 minutes, leaving traffic at a standstill.
