HAVE you taken up the gauntlet of the 100 Day Waste Reduction Challenge yet?

Cheshire West and Chester Council has launched the new community initiative inviting residents to reduce their household waste by just 1kg each month.

The challenge will support people to take little actions which will create high-impact results.

Cheshire West and Chester currently sends over 87,000 tonnes of household waste to landfill each year. That is the equivalent to the weight of 8,700 buses - if these were parked bumper to bumper they would stretch from Chester to Birmingham.

Councillor Lynn Riley said: “On average each household in Cheshire West and Chester currently throws away 50kg of waste every month. The challenge we are setting residents is to reduce this by just 1kg each month, the equivalent of just a bag of sugar.

“We are also looking for residents to keep us updated with emails and photos on the innovative and fun ways they find to achieve this and hope to see all members of the household getting involved to do their bit.

“If every household in West Cheshire was to achieve this 1kg target 1,700 tonnes of waste could be avoided in one year, equivalent to the weight of 340 elephants.”

A series of interactive roadshows is touring locations across the borough during March, asking local residents to sign-up to the challenge. Including hands-on activities and advice, residents can discover how easy it is to reduce their waste by 1kg a month.

To support the campaign, a dedicated section within the CWAC website has been developed – see www.cheshirewestand chester.gov.uk/ wastechallenge.

The pages will contain the dates of roadshows plus handy tips to help reduce your households waste.
