It's the hottest day of the year so far but that doesn't mean it'll be plain sailing all day long.

Temperatures are expected to rocket to a scorching 31°C in Chester today (July 19), hotter even than holiday havens like Ibiza. But the Met Office has issued a severe weather warning of rain which will be in force for more than 24 hours.

Thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain are expected to hit from 5pm today until 6pm on Wednesday (July 20).

With predictions that some places could see around 30mm of rainfall in an hour, flash flooding is possible.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Whilst most places will miss the worst, please be aware of the risk of flash flooding.

"Frequent lightning, large hail and strong winds could be additional hazards.

"All of this could lead to some flooding of homes, businesses and transport networks. Disruption to power is also possible."

Upton Heath Primary School has cancelled its sports day due to the soaring temperatures.
