A MANHUNT is under way for two teenage thugs who left an innocent victim fighting for his life on New Year's Day after almost having his windpipe severed in an attack with a broken bottle.

Just after 12.30am on January 1, the teenage victim was rushed to Whiston Hospital for emergency surgery on a deep, 10-inch laceration which stretched from his cheek, under his chin and across his throat.

Police believe the 17-year-old was involved in an altercation outside the Derby pub at the junction of Widnes Road and Salisbury Street just moments before the attackers struck.

The victim was walking along Ryland Street when he was confronted by the two thugs. Police say they could be aged 15-17, but a witness to the earlier incident said the culprits could be as young as 13.

A 'short conversation' took place before one passed a glass bottle to the other and, without warning, it was plunged into the victim's face and neck.

A Mersey Regional Ambulance Service spokeswoman said they received a top priority 'Red Call' to the incident.

The victim was conscious and breathing when the rapid response team arrived.

The two culprits are now the target of a major investigation.

Police believe the teens seen outside the pub are responsible for the attack and have issued descriptions in the hope further witnesses will contact them.

The offender who slashed the victim's throat is said to be aged about 15-17, white, 5ft 5in, slim and with short fair hair.

He was clean shaven, spoke with a slight Merseyside accent and wore a dark blue, hooded top with the words Gap or Cat emblazoned across the chest.

His accomplice - who supplied the weapon - is believed to be aged 15, 5ft tall and also slim. He had a dark hoodie and wore white trainers.

Descriptions of the youths out-side the Derby matches the two suspects now being hunted.

A police spokesman said: 'This is a completely unprovoked attack on an innocent person making his way home.'

An urgent appeal is now under way for anyone who saw the incident outside the pub or the stabbing shortly after. Police also want to hear from anyone who believes they may know the identity of the offenders.

They should contact DC Chris Jones of Halton's Serious Incident Unit on 01244 613952 or 01244 613 954. Information can also be left anonymously on the Crime-stoppers hotline, 0800 555 111.
