PROPERTY agents marketing the Forum Shopping Centre hope to secure another client to replace anchor store TJ Hughes in the near future.

The Chester store was among 21 outlets to close across the group and shut its doors on Sunday.

This follows the administrators being called in to run the Liverpool-based group in June.

Some shops, including those in Liverpool and Widnes, have been bought by Lewis's Home Retail. But administrators Ernst and Young failed to find a buyer for the remainder.

Sue Haslam, director at Legat Owen, said: “We have got some interest. Obviously, TJ Hughes was the anchor there so we are anxious to get that unit trading, even if only on one level, as soon as possible.”

Ms Haslam is confident another tenant can be found but accepts it will be on ‘very reduced terms’.

She understands the Chester TJ Hughes store was profitable but believes its future was compromised because of doubts over whether it might have to close in three years if the Northgate Development goes ahead.

She added: “We need to keep as much activity in the mall as we can for other tenants and the market.”

GA Europe bought the chain's £10m debt and is overseeing clearance sales at stores across the country.

And shoppers were keen to pick up a bargain during the Chester store’s last weekend of trading when some items were reduced in price by up to 90%.
