CHESHIRE’S Sandstone Ridge provided inspiration for a storytelling workshop.

Primary school teachers joined professional storyteller Johnny Gillett at Queen’s Parlour Caves as part The Sandstone Tale project.

Johnny, aka The Journey Man, said: “The teachers were quite nervous about the idea of storytelling at first but by the second day they had all created some wonderful stories and were telling them with great skill.

“When teaching children, the steps from the oral into literacy seem easier and more natural when those involved become excited about their stories.”

Johnny told the teachers a tale called The Ridgewyrm which he describes as “fakelore”.

“The story is a mythical explanation of the appearance of the sandstone ridge and the way it divides the Cheshire Plain,” said Johnny.
