A TATTENHALL postmistress enjoyed a day of celebrations to mark nearly three decades at the village post office.

Val Moon, aged 65 from Tarvin has decided to retire after 28 years running the post office on High Street in the village.

She said: “When I arrived the post office sold everything but food. It was really a hardware store, we sold Calor gas, barbed wire and kitchen utensils.

“When I started in 1983 it was before computers, so we would be counting out notes, and doing everything with pen and paper, whereas now we just push buttons.”

Since then as times have changed, the post office has altered to keep up.

“Now we sell mostly cards and some stationary as well as our post office services.”

Val says she will miss her colleagues and her customers the most.

She added: “My colleagues have been with me for a long time. In fact one of them has been with me the whole time. So I will miss them all terribly.

“I have received a great many cards from my customers.

“I am finding it sad. The thing is this is my post office which I have built up and developed as the years have gone on, so it will be very hard to say goodbye and see someone else come in and take over.”

Val said she plans to spend as much time as possible with her son and two grandchildren who live in London.

She added: “I am so grateful to everybody’s kind words – it has been lovely.”

Diane Craven is now taking over the position of Tattenhall Post Office postmistress .
