Firefighters battled 20ft flames after tyres set fire at a farm while the farmer was asleep.

Crews fought the giant flames throughout the night as the fire blazed at a farm off Frog Lane in Tattenhall.

Firefighters reported facing flames of up to 25ft as tyres and straw set alight at around 2.30am today (Thursday, September 11).

The fire is said to have started after a controlled fire was put out but spread to a nearby pile of tyres – the fire started while he was asleep in bed, firefighters said.

But Crew Manager George Peers, of Chester Fire Station, said that the man had not been hurt during the fire, which took three and a half hours to put out.

“He thought he had put it out, but it caught while he was sleeping,” said firefighter Peers.

Two fire engines from Chester Fire Station attended the blaze, and firefighters used hose reels to extinguish the blaze.

The Chronicle wishes to clarify that no tyres were being deliberately burnt at the farm, as previously stated.
