Pupils of Highfield Primary School in  Blacon are a talented bunch.

The school hosted children from across the  North West for a Saturday Challenge, as part  of the NWGT (North West Gifted and Talented) programme.

Three of the school’s Year 6 pupils, Ella  Pinnington, Star Hurley and Kameron Kartopu and three Year 5 pupils, Hannah Bristow, Alesha Halliwell and Halena Halliwell  took part in the event where artists and  mathematicians got together to produce optical art canvases.

Thirty pupils from as far as Bolton, Altrincham and Wilmslow travelled to Blacon  for the day to participate in the Intrinsic  Lines event,  co-ordinated by Highfield teacher Juliette Benton.

She said: “It was a very successful day.  The  pupils studied optical artists such as Bridget  Riley, Vistor Vasarley and Richard  Anuszkiewicz, then created their own design  using angle, measurement and symmetry  which they transferred to canvas using permanent pens.

“Then the children used threads wrapped  around pins to enhance their designs.

“Feedback was very positive and as this is  the second challenge day we have run, we  have now put in an application to host  another in the spring term.”
