A CHINESE takeaway can extend its opening hours despite fears about litter and yobs.

Shi Ping Li had her application for longer trading hours at the Kam Xin Takeaway in Whitby approved by the borough council's licensing sub-committee.

Members ruled she can provide late-night takeaway food at 3 Woodland Road from 11.30am-1.30pm and 4.30-11.30pm Monday to Thursday, from 11.30-1.30pm and 4.30-midnight Friday and Saturday, and 4.30pm-midnight on Sunday.

Miss Li outlined in her application a number of steps she has already taken to safeguard customers and the area.

She said: 'We are trained in health and safety and food hygiene, and keep the outside of the shop clean.

'We work with the local community officer to tell them of any public nuisance, and have CCTV installed.

'There are no vending or gambling machines in the shop and we have also put up a sign (warning about) crime and disorder.'

But a Woodland Road resident wrote to the council, saying they 'strongly objected' to the extension.

They said: 'I object on the grounds that the mess that ends up in my garden - including takeaway cartons, wrapping paper and vomit - would obviously increase. This can also be seen around the shops in the morning.

'The longer opening hours would lead to groups hanging around for longer, leading to an increase in anti-social behaviour.'
