Spare a thought for builders working on Chester’s £37m new theatre on the hottest day of the year – but at least their delicate complexions should be protected from the sun.

The hazard board outside the under-construction Hunter Street venue reminds construction staff about the dangers of dehydration.

And workers are urged to protect themselves from the sun with the lotion available.

Kier Group Plc is building the cultural centre, named Storyhouse, which will now open to the public in spring 2017 following a slight delay in the schedule.

The hazard board outside the under construction Chester theatre warns workers to beware of dehydration and says 'protect yourself from the sun - lotion available'

Kier is an associate member of the Considerate Constructors Scheme which has policies to look after the workforce and the community.

And the scheme’s website has a section on sun protection which states: “Construction workers have an increased risk of developing skin cancer due to their prolonged exposure to outdoor conditions.

“It is important to acknowledge these risks and take a proactive stance to prevent harmful exposures.”

And if the workers get too hot in the sunshine there will be no excuse for letting off steam through using ‘industrial language’.

That’s because The Chronicle recently reported that as a member of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, the workers are dissuaded from using four-letter words.

Project director Graham Lister takes The Chronicle on a tour of Storyhouse

Notices taped to dining tables in the canteen remind staff that ‘swearing and shouting will not be tolerated anywhere on site’ due to the ‘sensitive surroundings’ of the city centre location and nearby residents in King Street.

Project manager Graham Lister, who works for Cheshire West and Chester Council, told The Chronicle on a recent tour of the site: “The thing is you have got residents just here so things are very different on big construction sites now.

“You can’t have swearing and shouting and shouting at people on the street and all that sort of stuff. The industry has changed.”
