PERFORMING arts students from West Cheshire College held a drama workshop at Blacon High School based on their recent production of Metamorphosis by playwright Steven Berkoff.

The play, performed by students studying Theatre and Performance (Acting) BTEC Extended Diploma, tells the story of Gregor, a young man who is the sole financial supporter of his family until he awakes one morning in the form of a giant insect and thereby becoming a nuisance to his family, who must now learn to rely upon themselves.

The workshop for Year 11 drama pupils included an extract from the play, as well as a workshop and question and answer session to discuss the play’s key themes of acceptance and the behaviour of the world towards the primary character.

Pupils from Blacon High School were also invited to the play’s performance at Whitby Hall Studio in Ellesmere Port, which was attended by students, parents and tutors as well as Jessica Egan and Nina Hajiyianni, Producer and Director from Action Transport Theatre.

Paul Moss, performing arts tutor, said: “The play that the students performed proved to be a fantastic example of the standard of work that the Theatre and Performance department produce. It was as high as you would find on a professional stage.”

Currently based at Whitby Hall Studio, performing arts students will enjoy a host of new facilities from September 2011 with the opening of a new state-of-the-art theatre as part of West Cheshire College’s new Creative and Service Industries Campus.
