The news has delighted teachers at the Northwich college. Tass Sgouros, head of student progression and guidance, said: 'This is marvellous news - to have as many as 12 students accepted at Oxford and Cambridge is a real achievement for the students and the college.'

Those who hope to take up positions at Cambridge are Felicity Davies from Northwich (Architecture), Sean Dyson, Barnton (Natural Sciences), Naomi Hall, Northwich (Architecture), Paul Morris, Hartford (Chemical Engineering), Michael Kielty of Congleton (English) and Lauren Harris, Warrington (Modern Languages).

Off to Oxford are Angela Higson, Hartford (Law), Joe Jenkins, Lach Dennis (Maths), Christopher Ashley, Hartford (Earth Science), David Twambley, Moulton (Modern History), Frith Ellingham, Weaverham (Human Sciences), Mark Allen, Warrington (PPE/Maths/Economics).

Mr Sgouros added: 'Our students should be justly proud of their efforts. It is a reward and acknowledgement for the candidates' hard work, application and ability.'

He said the college offers a structured Oxbridge programme to prepare students for the rigorous selection process with members of the careers department supporting students throughout the stages.
