Gusts of more than 70mph are possible as Storm Barney hits Cheshire West.

A Met Office weather warning came into effect from 4pm on Tuesday (November 17).

Winds of this strength could bring down trees and damage some buildings and the public should be wary on the roads.

The notice is expected to last until 2am tomorrow, but the southwesterly gales will ease quickly.

Vigorous depression

The Met Office chief forecaster said: "A vigorous depression will track quickly east across Ireland and then northern England this evening.

"A swathe of very strong winds is developing on the southern flank of the low pressure."

Gales could reach 80mph in exposed coasts, headlands and hilltops.

Across the north west the local authorities of Cheshire East, Halton and Warrington are also affected by the warning.

In the latest stormy weather, flooding is expected on Tuesday night for parts of Chester and the English Dee.
