A turtle stolen from a tank at Blue Planet Aquarium has been returned.

Alarms had been raised after Clyde was pinched from the Cheshire Oaks attraction on Tuesday (August 31).

Officers had been urgently trying to find the animal which could have died if left without proper care.

But fortunately Clyde is now back at the aquarium in less than 24 hours.

The turtle was dropped off by three women, but Cheshire Police say the incident will not be taken any further.

'Restorative justice'

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: "Police can happily confirm the safe return of Clyde the turtle to Blue Planet Aquarium.

"The three women who dropped Clyde off have been spoken to, and in line with the aquarium’s wishes, the incident has been resolved through restorative justice.

"We’d like to thank the media and the public for their help."

The mud turtle's absence gained national coverage with the story being picked up by the BBC and Sky News.

Cheshire Police said they had kept an ‘open mind’ as to why Clyde was taken.

They had said it was a boy who managed to get the turtle out of the tank. He then walked away and was thought to have hidden Clyde under a jumper.
