Jousting, archery and sword fighting were just some of the challenges set for George in Chester’s celebrations of England’s saint’s day last Thursday.

Street performers and more than 300 schoolchildren retold the legend of St George with a special twist in the dragon’s tale.

Artistic director Russell Kirk said: “Thousands of people lined the streets and joined in with the action on a glorious day.

“It is such a special event for Chester with well known street performers, musicians and actors taking part.”

Primary school children from Chester Bluecoat, Tattenhall Park, Wolverham, Frodsham CE, Winsford High Street, Charles Darwin School, Hoole CE and Tarporley CE and Pine Lodge joined street performers Harry Kingham, Steve Wallis and Jason Sheppard as minstrels, knights and jesters to bring the story to life.

Music was provided by The Weevils as the company paraded around the city in a pageant of colour and sound.
