ST GEORGE’S Day on Saturday, April 23 will be celebrated on Chester Town Hall Square with the return of the Dragon, the Princess and St George.

If you thought you knew the St George legend then be prepared for a few surprises as the updated story gets its own Chester twist with the help of school children from Kingsley Primary, Farndon Primary, Malpas Alport Primary, Witton Church Walk Primary and Dee Point Primary School.

Swords, lances and bows; shields, helmets, flags and wimples; dragons, peasants, jesters and curious mediaeval diseases - all of this and more will take place on St George’s Day at 11am at the Town Hall Square.

The Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Neil Ritchie, will be the special guest of honour, ensuring fair play as St George confronts the Dragon.

He said: “I hope to welcome both residents and visitors to Chester Town Hall Square as we celebrate St George, England’s Patron Saint.

“This year there is also an opportunity to join the fun and take part in the performance.”

Cheshire West and Chester Council are offering two weekends of special workshops to make costumes and props for the St George’s Day event.

The workshops are being held at the rehearsal rooms, above Chester Market, opposite the Forum Studio Theatre, on April 9, 10, 16 and 17 between 10am and noon and 1pm to 3pm.

The workshops, run by Chester artist Russell Kirk, are suitable for anyone from 7-70 (children must be accompanied). The workshops are free of charge but participants must commit to attend the performance on April 23.

To take part, send your details to Russell Kirk at ark.kirk@btinternet.com.
