A YEAR 9 pupil at Wade Deacon High triumphed in the Halton Schools' Public Speaking Competition at Halton Stadium.

Sophie Fitzpatrick beat pupils of all other Halton schools to scoop the trophy and vouchers from Borders Books.

Speaking in the Key Stage 3 competition on the subject of stereotyping, Sophie delivered a measured and confident speech in front of an invited audience.

Sarah Reynolds, of Year 11, also represented the school in the Key Stage 4 competition and spoke on the subject of young people and mental health. She was highly commended.

Howard Mealey, co-ordinator of Wade Deacon's entries, said: 'I simply couldn't fault the commitment of both girls.'
