AN INNOVATIVE saving scheme has raised nearly £4,000 for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.

When customers open an Affinity Account with the Cheshire Building Society, it gives 1% of the interest generated to the Backford unit.

Therefore, by the end of 2005, a total of £3,816.82 had been raised, which was handed over to hospice fundraisers by branch manager Karen Hughes.

Hospice chief fundraiser Amanda Le Bretton thanked them for the cash, saying: 'We want as many people as possible to open up these saving accounts. They still get their interest as normal and the scheme benefits us as well.'

The Cheshire said in a statement: 'We are delighted to be able to support the hospice like this.

'We are committed to supporting the local community in which we operate.

'Residents can make their own contributions by going to any of our branches and opening an Affinity Account.

'On December 31 we contributed from our own funds 1% of the total average balance over the year to the hospice.'

Cheshire branches can be found in Chester Road, Little Sutton; High Street, Neston; and Bridge Street, Chester.

Cheshire staff will be promoting the scheme at the Hospice Summer Fair in Gordon Lane, Backford, on Saturday, July 1.
