Six men and a juvenile have been arrested after a chase involving the force helicopter which saw two police vehicles rammed.

Officers were alerted after the males stole a car from Mason Street near the fountains roundabout, Chester, just before 11.30pm last night (Thursday).

Police pursued the car through the city centre down Princess Street, St Martin’s Way and Grosvenor Street and on to Handbridge.

The car was also being pursued by the force helicopter which is equipped with a search light and thermal imaging cameras which can detect body heat.

As the two police vehicles parked up behind the car in the car park of West Cheshire College in Eaton Road, the driver rammed them causing minor damage. No one was injured.

The car was driven through railings into a field before being abandoned when the occupants fled on foot.   However, the six men and a juvenile were all arrested.

Cheshire Police spokeswoman Rachel Hayes confirmed the suspects are four men aged 23, 21, 20 and 22 from Chester,  a 16 year old boy from Chester, a 21-year-old from Ellesmere Port and an 18-year-old from Birkenhead.

The 21 year old from Ellesmere Port was arrested for aggravated vehicle taking while the rest were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

She said footage from CCTV cameras was being examined for possible use as evidence.
