Who doesn't love a bargain on their supermarket shopping?

When it comes to hunting for the best deals, more and more customers are doing an online shop to save that bit of extra cash, and there are many ways you can do this, including with various cashback deals and discounts.

When it comes to fresh meat, fish and cheese, we've discovered it could be cheaper to resist the fancy packaged products on the shelves and instead head straight to the fresh food counters.

This may surprise many readers, as it has previously been the belief that buying food fresh can actually end up costing a lot more. However this seems to be no longer the case.

Asda on Chester's Greyhound Park

Moneysavingexpert.com searched the shelves and counters of the four big supermarkets - Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

They found that shoppers could save up to 40% gram for gram for almost identical or similar products.

This even applies to premium brands too; for example Sainsbury's Taste the Difference pork sausages were 10% cheaper if bought from the fresh counter as here it was priced as £2.25 for 400g while the ones in the packs on the shelves costs £2.50 for the same weight.

Tesco on Sealand Road, Chester.

Haddock fillets in Asda were priced at £3.05 for 306g while in the fish aisle the product costs shoppers £3.96 for 306g.

When it came to Morrisons , the supermarket had priced Manchego at £2.54 for £175g on its fresh counter while on the shelves nearby it was priced at £3 for the same weight.

One of the biggest differences in price was Pilgrims Choice Mature Cheddar cheese from Tesco which was £1.93 for 350g if shoppers bought it from the counter - however, those who picked up the packaged blocks from the aisles were paying £3 for 350g.
