Each of you will have no doubt spent some time sitting on the stretch of motorway on the M56 between Junctions 12 and 14, or the opposite direction.

Whether as a driver, or a passenger, you will have sighed deeply and looked at the flashing signs saying ‘Slow’ and thought there must be a better way?

Well, there has to be. We’re often accused at The Chronicle of being ‘obsessed with the M56’. Well, we are, because we know how many of you rely on that stretch of road to get to work, to visit friends or to escape for a holiday.

Motorways are the building block of our modern society and their importance is not slowing down. The pressure upon them is mounting and the investment to match this pressure needs to be maintained.

Without that investment we face losing countless hours stuck in traffic jams and more importantly the lives of drivers and passengers.

Safety should always be the paramount thing on the minds of those responsible for our highways and those using them.

We support Mr Madders, Mr Matheson and many others who are asking what can be done to Fix the M56 as they say. Yes, we’re all sick of it, but let’s ensure whatever the outcome it’s a safer road for everyone for the years and decades to come.
