Motorists travelling southbound on the M6 towards Cheshire are experiencing major disruption to their journeys following a vehicle fire earlier this afternoon (May 2).

Traffic is at a standstill on the Thelwall Viaduct and two lanes have been closed between junction 21 for the A57 and junction 20 at Lymm Interchange.

Fire crews are currently at the scene of the incident.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "Contractors will assess the carriageway as soon as it is safe to do so and everything will be done to get this section of the motorway open again as quickly as possible.

"Drivers are advised to plan their journeys, allow extra time and take an alternative route where appropriate."
