Libraries hit by strike

Six libraries in the borough will be closed due to the pay strike, and a further three will close two hours early at 5pm this Thursday (July 10).

Libraries closed will be Chester, Lache, Little Sutton, Frodsham, Wharton and Barnton.

Those closing at 5pm rather than 7pm will be Winsford, Northwich and Malpas.

The Winsford-based Education Library Service will not be open to visitors, but staff will be available to answer telephone and email enquiries. Deliveries to schools will operate as normal.

All West Cheshire schoolchildren entitled to free school meals will be provided with packed lunches if hot meals cannot be provided.

The Chester Children in Need team will be providing an emergency service only, and at Winsford, the Children in Care, Children in Need, and Children with Disabilities teams will be covering duty and emergencies only.

The Cheshire Record Office in Chester will also be closed to visitors, but can be contacted via the website, telephone and email.

Some disruption to Streetscene services is expected.

Strike action affects markets

Three markets across West Cheshire will be closed on Thursday (July 10) due to a one-day strike by public sector workers over pay.

Markets at Chester, Ellesmere Port and Northwich will be affected by the joint industrial action of Unison, GMB and Unite.

Winsford market will not be affected by the dispute.

The great majority of operatives and duty officers, responsible for opening the markets, security and cleaning have signified that they will be joining the national protest in support of ‘fair pay’.

A spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester Council said: “The authority regrets that it has no alternative but to shut the markets on safety and security grounds and has informed traders accordingly.

“We apologise to members of the public and traders for any inconvenience caused.”

Chester Market will be open as normal on Wednesday and Friday; Ellesmere Port will be open on Tuesday and Friday and Northwich, Tuesday and Friday.

Only the cafe at Northwich market opens on a Thursday but this will remain closed due to the industrial action.
