THREE Widnes teenagers have received police cautions after being caught stealing fencing from the grounds of Fairfield High School.

The arrests of three 14-year-old boys were made as part of a borough-wide crack-down on crime at school premises.

Neighbourhood policing unit officers raced to the scene after a resident dialled 999.

Police are now warning that special patrols are carrying out checks at schools throughout the rest of the summer holidays to deter theft, vandalism, anti-social behaviour and youth crime.

Action was stepped up in the wake of an arson attack at Fairfield High School in Widnes.

PC Janine Lea, who arrested the three youths, said: 'We will continue to take this kind of positive action to protect schools in Widnes and to re-assure local residents.'

Any residents who see youths on school premises or who witness crimes should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or 0845 458 0000.
