PARENTS have a final chance to express their views on a controversial package of school closures and mergers.

Consultation sessions will take place at Lodgefields Community Primary School in Crewe - one of three schools earmarked for the axe to save cash.

It will be the last opportunity for people fighting to save Lodgefields, plus Buerton and Worleston St Oswald's primary schools, from closure as part of the county's Transforming Learning Communities (TLC) strategy.

The TLC plans would also see Victoria Community Technology School and Coppenhall High in Crewe merge into one super-school on the Coppenhall site in Coronation Street.

Primary schools merging would be Broad Street Infant and Church Coppenhall Junior; Gainsborough Nursery and Infant and Gainsborough Junior; Underwood West Nursery and Infant and Underwood West Junior; and Wistaston Westfield Infant and Wistaston Junior schools.

But it is the proposed school closures which have triggered outcry across the borough.

Lodgefields parents have organised petitions and staged protests outside County Hall to lobby councillors entering the building for meetings.

PM Tony Blair has also been asked to intervene in the fight to save the school - the fifth most improved school in Cheshire and serves a growing area of Crewe.

A county council spokeswoman said: 'People have two further opportunities to have their say over the future of primary education in their community.

'The suggested changes reflect the fact that an increasing number of empty desks in Crewe and Nantwich mean fewer primary schools are required to meet the community's future needs.'

Buerton hosts drop-in sessions on Tuesday, 3.30-4.30pm and 5.30-7pm. Lodgefields will host drop-in sessions next Wednesday from 2.30-3.30pm and 5.30-7pm.

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the proposals and to register their views.

Anyone unable to attend the meeting can fill in a consultation document online at www.cheshire.gov.uk/tlc or a paper copy can be obtained by calling 01244 602449.

A consultation session for Worleston St Oswald's primary school took place last week.
