SUNDAY witnessed a Save the Family outing to Northgate Arena, courtesy of BiG Storage, when several families went to watch the BiG Storage Cheshire Jets play the Worcester Wolves.

As basketball increases in popularity, it is also evolving as a leading platform to deliver the importance of a healthy lifestyle to school children.

Through the recently launched Hoops for Health programme, 16 Chester schools have been the recipients of a healthy living campaign, delivered by professional sporting role models, utilising basketball as an activity to communicate a range of positive health messages to young people in primary schools.

Having been involved in The Chronicle’s Make a Difference Gift Appeal for Save the Family, Andrew Donaldson of BiG Storage now plans to promote the family aspect of the game by inviting Save the Family residents to home games on a regular basis.

Basketball nets are also to be presented to the charity in the New Year to promote physical well-being and the sheer fun of participation.

Andrew said: “After having visited the Save the Family Centre a couple of weeks ago, I was utterly humbled by the experience and full of total admiration for what Edna Speed has achieved and hopes to do for the future.

“The visit has left me vowing to do as much as I can to help, on both a business and personal level.”

There’ll be plenty of gifts waiting for homeless parents and children at Save the Family’s Plas Bellin centre this Christmas, thanks to your generosity. When it comes to Christmas dinner and all the trimmings though, it may be a different story.

The charity is facing a critical festive food shortage and is struggling to secure enough seasonal fare to feed 150 children and adults on Christmas Day.

“The response to the gift appeal has been quite fantastic,” said Save the Family founder Edna Speed MBE. “Unfortunately, we haven’t had as many food donations as we anticipated..”

The charity is appealing for a variety of items, including turkeys, stuffing, chipolata sausages, Christmas cakes, logs and puddings. Items such as custard, cream and fizzy drinks would also be welcomed.
