A BLAZE at a car showroom in Saughall which destroyed vehicles and damaged the building was started deliberately.

Investigators from Cheshire Police confirmed the fire – at the Cheshire Trade Centre, formerly Ben Whitehouse Garage, on Parkgate Road, Saughall, at about 11pm last night (Wednesday) – was started deliberately based on their initial assessment of the scene.

“A motorhome parked outside the premises was destroyed, and a second fire that started in the showroom itself has caused extensive damage to vehicle stock,” said Cheshire Police spokesperson Shelley Williams

“Police implemented road closures in the area for a short time.”

Appliances from Ellesmere Port, Chester – including the aerial platform – and Deeside were called to the inferno.

Red watch manager John Caulfield – who battled the blaze until about 3am – said: “Some cars were involved.

“We prevented the fire from spreading in to the roof space.

“Positive pressure ventilation fans were used to control the smoke.

“Six officers using breathing apparatus used three hose reels to extinguish the fire.

“The cause is under the investigation.”
