Saltney link road and train station plan mooted

PLANS to give Saltney’s businesses a massive boost by strengthening transport links have been unveiled.

PLANS to give Saltney’s businesses a massive boost by strengthening transport links have been unveiled.

Outline proposals have been drawn up to link the B5129 road through Saltney Ferry with the River Lane Industrial Estate in a bid to avoid congestion along the High Street and provide better access to businesses.

There are also plans afoot to renew the town’s demand for a train station which, if approved, would be situated near the Morrisons superstore.

Saltney mayor Cllr Veronica Gay, who is backing the plans, said: “I would welcome the opening up of this road as it would bring business and jobs to the area.

“It would be fantastic and bring growth and prosperity for Saltney.

“This link would support our existing businesses with easier links to the A55 and the M56.

“It could also open up the riverbank for the tourism side – we could make that a really nice area for walkers to enjoy all the wildlife by the river.”

Cllr Gay added: “I am also pushing for a railway station and have been meeting Tony Sharps, chairman of (regional transport consortium) Taith.

“I think if you get the right people they could really develop that area and it would be such an improvement.”

Cllr Matt Wright, Flintshire County Council’s executive member for regeneration and tourism, said: “It’s a really great idea. We have such a vibrant community down there with a few hi-tech businesses.

“It’s important we don’t forget about Saltney and this would make a real difference to the area.”

Plans for a train station in the town received support from North Wales politicians when they were initially announced in late 2009.

There was once a train station in the town on the Chester-Shrewsbury line, but was closed in the 1960s.
