SALTNEY Ferry Scout and Guide group has unveiled outline plans to build a new headquarters.

The larger base is aimed at replacing the 44-year-old headquarters on Bradshaw Avenue, which is running at full capacity and is in need of an upgrade.

Robert Benyon, leader of the Scout and Guide group, showed the plans to councillors at the latest Saltney Town Council meeting.

Mr Benyon said: “Our headquarters has been home for 44 years and it’s far too small for our projected numbers.

“We have 120 children who use the building on a weekly basis, and are the fastest-growing group in Flintshire.

“The current issues include a lack of parking space, as it’s not safe and very often vehicle access is impossible. We also have to park our minibus at a separate company which is costing us.

“We have no insulation and the heating system is inefficient. We want our new building to be an environmentally friendly headquarters. Once the new building is completed the old one would be demolished and converted into parking.

“The new building would include disabled access and toilets, which we currently do not have.

“The new building will have a hall which is 50% bigger.”

Although costs are as yet unknown, a number of fundraisers have been held in aid of the project.

Saltney town councillors voiced approval. Deputy mayor Richard Lloyd said: “The Scout and Guide groups do a marvellous job and I think any backing is well worthwhile.”

The plans will be discussed at the council’s environmental and regeneration committee on June 24.
