HAMMOND School students have been taught by a legend of the dancing world.

Bolshoi star Irek Mukhamedov, who was once voted best dancer in the world, gave a masterclass to ballet students at the Hoole Bank school.

The dancing superstar put the students at ease during his class in the new performing arts centre and urged them to ‘use your muscles’ and to ‘listen to the music’.

He had wise advice for anyone considering a career in classical ballet.

He said: “Work hard and be disciplined. Without a will to dance you will never progress.”

It was a particularly poignant visit for Year 11 pupil Daniel Dolan, who has won a place at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy.

Daniel, 16, will be only the third British male dancer to take up a place at the renowned Russian school in the last 233 years.

Mukhamedov was the Bolshoi Ballet’s leading male dancer for nine years and joined the Royal Ballet in London in 1990.

He also presented the prizes on The Hammond's annual prizegiving day.
