Acton Swing Bridge will undergo essential repairs for two weeks from Monday (June 15).

The bridge, which carries the A49 over the River Weaver, will be reduced to a single lane managed by temporary traffic lights from Monday to Friday (June 19).

Following this, the works will be completed in night-time lane closures, with the road fully open during the daytime.

The Canal & River Trust, which owns the 83-year-old bridge, will use contractors to carry out structural repairs underneath the bridge deck.

Richard Spencer, senior project manager with the trust, explained: “The need for emergency repairs to the bridge just before Christmas highlighted a number of long-term maintenance issues which need putting right.

“These immediate repairs are required to ensure the bridge remains fully operational and a larger project is planned for later in the year.

“We will do all we can to minimise delays to journey times, but it is vital that we carry out these essential repairs now to prevent further deterioration of the bridge.”

While the Canal & River Trust is responsible for the structure of the bridge, Cheshire West and Chester Council is responsible for maintaining the road.

Weaver and Cuddington councillor Charles Fifield added: “This bridge is an important link for both the borough and the local community and it is essential that this repair work is carried out as soon as possible.

“There will be some short term disruption and we apologise to residents for this inconvenience and we would like to thank drivers for their patience during the period of the works.”

Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge reopened in October after undergoing a year-long restoration project to extend its life by more than 50 years.
