Oil Sites Road in Ellesmere Port remains closed following a fatal crash involving two oil tankers yesterday (Thursday, October 6).

The accident took place near the National Waterways Museum at around 1pm.

Tragically, a 40-year-old man, who was driving one of the tankers, died as a result of the crash.

Firefighters remain at the scene today (October 7) after working through the night as part of a major clean-up operation.

Several foam blankets have been laid over the spilled fuel and fire crews have monitored the air for gas.

The Environmental Agency confirmed that around 11,000 litres of fuel leaked on to the road between Dock Yard Road junction and Pool Lane junction.

However, the spillage has had no environmental impact on the River Gowy or the River Mersey, an Environment Agency spokesman confirmed.

Cheshire Police has launched an investigation into the collision and it is not known when Oil Sites Road will re-open.

Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 420.
