Retired Chester businessman Roger John Davies saw an open road and decided to give his Jaguar ‘some stick’.

But the 69-year-old was caught driving at 102mph on the Mold by-pass in North Wales.

Davies, of Greensway, Curzon Park in Chester, admitted breaking the 60mph speed limit on July 18 last year.

He was banned from driving for 28 days and fined £220 with £85 costs and a £22 surcharge.

Prosecutor Alun Williams told Flintshire magistrates’ court at Mold today (Thursday, February 4) that at 5.50pm that day the defendant’s speed was checked by a camera device on the A494 Mold by-pass at Broncoed and found to be 102mph.

"I have a Jaguar"

Davies, who represented himself, was asked why he had driven at such a high speed.

He replied: “Nothing, I hold my hands up. It was an open road. I have a Jaguar, I thought I would just give it some stick. There is no excuse. I cannot turn the clock back.

“It seemed quite safe at the time. There were no cars on the road, but breaking the law is breaking the law. It is as simple as that.”

Davies, who had a clean driving licence, said he really did not know how he would manage if he received a driving disqualification.

He was the day to day carer for his partner’s father who was 91 and disabled. He lived independently and he and his partner were the point of contact if he fell.

His partner had a serious back injury and would be unable to help in that respect. There was no other family to help, he said.

National Trust volunteer

Since he sold his business, he did voluntary work for the National Trust and at the local rugby club and in addition to being the primary carer for his partner’s father, he also helped look after the grandchildren.

Magistrates said that in view of the high speed there would have to be a 28 day driving ban.

They said that they appreciated that it would cause inconvenience but it was meant to be a punishment.

He would probably be able to use public transport or a taxi, they said.
