ALMOST 150 residents had their electricity supply cut off and motorists were hit by delays after a fire left an electricity cable lying in the road.

Firefighters were called to the blaze, which involved a high-voltage cable and pole, on the A51 close to the Red Fox restaurant in Tarporley at 12.33pm yesterday (Wednesday).

The Chester Chronicle was alerted to the incident on its Facebook page by Helen Chester of Chester.

Although crews dealt with the fire, a ScottishPower electricity cable was left lying in the road as a result of the incident.

Police assisted Cheshire West and Chester Council’s highways department in closing the A51 at the Tarporley bypass roundabout and the junction of Eaton Lane.

ScottishPower spokeswoman Jane Holmes said investigations were ongoing as to why the cable had caught fire.

She said they were called to the scene at 12.44pm and by 1.07pm had been forced to cut off supply to 142 customers in order to carry out repairs.

Half-an-hour later the electricity supply was returned to 107 residents, although the remaining 35 were still without power when the Chronicle went to press.

A spokeswoman for the council said the road closure was expected to be in place until about 6-7pm last night.
