Homes, schools and businesses across Chester and Ellesmere Port are recovering after being hit by flash floods.

A huge volume of water fell in the space of an hour and caught many off guard on Tuesday afternoon (June 15).

Ellesmere Port was hardest hit with a number of road closures including the A5117 and Stanney Lane.

Stores at the Coliseum Shopping Park including Thomson, The Entertainer and River Island were forced to closed.

In total 10 outlets remained shut on Wednesday due to the sheer volume of water which came down from the skies.

A Coliseum spokesman said: “Following heavy rainfall in the area, part of the Coliseum Shopping Park has been affected.

“However Debenhams, Sports Direct, H&M, New Look, Outfit, Deichmann, Starbucks, Costa, Carphone Warehouse, O2, Pizza Hut and Burger King are open today and will be trading as usual.

“We are working with the remaining stores to get them trading again at the earliest opportunity.”

At neighbouring Cheshire Oaks some stores did close for a period during the deluge, but all were able to safely open on Wednesday.

There was also slow traffic on the M53 and M56 with standing water collecting.

A Cheshire Police statement said they did not believe there had been any casualties.

The clean up has begun, but more heavy rain is possible on Wednesday and Thursday.

A Met Office statement said: “Scattered heavy, thundery showers are expected to develop yet again on Wednesday, and will lead to slow-moving downpours.

“As on preceding days, some locations will miss these downpours, but please be aware of possible localised flooding and disruption to travel where they do occur.”

Flood warnings are in place for catchment areas of both the River Mersey, including Ellesmere Port, and River Weaver, including Frodsham and Northwich.

Sutton Green Primary in Little Sutton opened again as normal on Tuesday after a flood hit on Friday which saw water coming through ceilings and floors affecting carpets and furniture.

Headteacher Ann Griffiths said all areas had been assessed for safety.

Carpets had been removed and cleaned or would be replaced while some children would be relocated in the school while maintenance was carried out.

The school had remained closed on Monday.

“Thank you to parents and carers for your prompt collection of children and to the children for following instructions,” said Mrs Griffiths.

She was also grateful to the ‘many parents who offered help, gave positive comments and thanked the school’ for the safe manner in which the children had been dismissed.

“It was greatly appreciated,” she said.

“On the day the children’s safety was our main priority.

“They could not collect belongings as we did not want them walking around school where water was coming through ceilings or floors.”
