The second series of The Secret Life of the Zoo hit our TV screens last night (November 17), and it certainly seems to have captured the nation's hearts all over again.

Reviews by the viewing public and professional television critics alike have been overwhelmingly positive so far.

According to The Telegraph, the Channel 4 documentary which offers unparallelled glimpses of what goes on behind the scenes at much-loved Chester Zoo 'ticked all the boxes' for people who prefer their nature full of 'cute oohs and aahs'.

The Guardian was similarly impressed by the 'simplicity' of the heartwarming show.

"As ever, its appeal is in its simplicity: filming the animals after hours; filming in the parts of the zoo that the public don’t see; and interviewing the people who work there (who – with all due recognition that they would hardly say otherwise – seem hearteningly committed)," wrote Andrew Mueller.

And of course, scores of loyal viewers took to social media to share their delight at the programme's return.

'Life goals'

Baby zebras, snogging sloths and a struggling warthog dad named Magnum were the stars of last night's show, but the dedicated zookeepers who care for them and reveal what it takes to keep them happy deservedly had their screen-time too.

Several tweeters were so enthralled by what the staff at Chester Zoo do for a living, they were led to ponder career changes.

With five more episodes on the way, we suspect they may have to form an orderly queue.

The next instalment airs at 8pm on November 24.
