A CENTRE that helps rape victims overcome the trauma of sexual violence could close if funding is not found.

Chester Rape Crisis offers an anonymous service for women who have suffered from any kind of sexual abuse or attack.

But thecentre, whichhas beenopenfor10 years, could close if funding is not found.

Treasurer of the organisation Kim Hovish said: 'Chester rape crisis is a counselling and support service run by women, for all women and girls over the age of 11 who have suffered any form of sexual abuse at any time in their lives.'

But chairman Caroline, a volunteer at the centre, said: 'Our minimum running costsfora yearare£1,500which isnotalot but we will close unless we get it.'

The centre in the middle of Chester offers a point of contact by telephone for victims, who speak to a volunteer.

Caroline said: 'It is up to the caller how much further they take it. After the initial call they can come into the centre and speak to a trained councillor and they can have as many sessions as they need.

'Some women have been seeing us for years, others only come the once.

'The service really helps people and we desperately do not want to close.'

Volunteers offer advice about legal proceedings, emergency contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. They can then arrange face to face counselling.

They can also accompany the women to a doctors' surgery, the police station or the courts and the all services are free.

The centre's call facility is available on Wednesdays from 6pm-7pm and Saturdays from 10am-1pm. Callers can also leave a message on the answer phone at any other time on 01244 317922.

Donations can be sent to Chester Rape Crisis, PO Box 280, Chester, CH1 1FB, or donors can call the above number.

The centre is also looking for volunteers to man the phones. Contact details above.
