PROTESTERS against development on the green belt around Chester are gathering for a rally close to the site of the proposed student village.

Friends of the North Chester Greenbelt say residents from Blacon, Saughall, Mollington, Upton and Guilden Sutton will be at the demonstration being held at the green space adjacent to Shelley Road/Milton Crescent, Blacon, at 10am this Saturday.

Chester Tory MP Stephen Mosley, who backs the group, has been invited together with Blacon and Mollington councillors.

The group aims to stop Bell Developments’ plans for a 2,300-bed student village and sports facilities backed by Olympic rower Sir Steve Redgrave on green belt land and ‘fight to stop Cheshire West and Chester Council building 5,000 houses on it’.

Leading campaigner Andy Scargill said if the greenbelt is developed Chester will eventually merge with Ellesmere Port to become ‘just one big urban sprawl’.
