A group of mums and teaching staff from The Queen’s School recently raised more than £2,400 for charity by taking on the infamous Royal Marine Endurance Course Commando Challenge.

The group of 11 women included lower school mums Sian Bailey from Chester, Helen Beaumont from Chester, Deborah Blakemore from Chester, Melinda Downey from Wirral, Shabna Heartin from Chester, Fiona Jeavons from Flintshire, Anna Oakden from Wirral, Jenny Vaughan from Chester along with headmistress Sarah Clark, head of sport Gemma Glynn and teaching assistant Kate Gater.

The fearless group ran 4km over rough terrain, crawled through very dark tunnels, waded through deep water and braved the famous ‘sheep dip’ where you are completely immersed in a 5 foot water tunnel.

The group came top of the combined fundraising and fastest time league table competing against other all-female groups from across the country.

The weekend in Woodbury Common, Exmouth involved staying at the Royal Marine Boathouse which gave the women a taste of military accommodation.

They were also transported up to Woodbury Common in four tonne troop carriers.

Overall the team has raised £2,486 for the events’ charities so far; the Devon Air Ambulance and the Royal Marine Charitable Trust.

Headmistress Sarah Clark said: “What an experience! It was very tough and we returned battered and bruised, but there were smiles all round at the end and we all came back feeling as though we had really risen to the challenge!”
